Case Study: 2025–26 Cohort at Gracemount High School, Edinburgh

Date:

The 2025–26 Leaders in Science cohort at Gracemount High School, Edinburgh showcased how senior pupils thrive when given opportunities to lead, communicate, and teach science to younger learners. Across two terms, students built knowledge and confidence with support from STEM mentors—then designed and delivered their own hands‑on workshops for primary pupils.

Term One: Learning from Scientists

Mentors designed and delivered two engaging, hands‑on workshops that introduced scientific ideas beyond the curriculum:

1) Ultraviolet Light: An Enlightening Experience

Students explored the theory, applications, and risks associated with UV radiation. They then took on a practical challenge: formulating, synthesising, and testing the efficacy of their own sunscreen samples.

2) Soil: A World Beneath Your Feet

Following an introduction to soil as a dynamic, diverse ecosystem used in ground‑breaking research, students collected and analysed soil samples from around the school. Analyses included pH measurement, gravimetric moisture determination, and agar inoculation to assess microbial growth.

Term Two: From Learners to Leaders

Through sessions on brainstorming, public speaking, and health & safety, students developed their own workshops inspired by the Term One themes. Delivery was repeated on two dates, allowing time for evaluation and refinement.

Impact and Reflections

The Gracemount cohort made remarkable progress—moving from participants to confident science communicators. Primary classes were highly engaged, and teachers reported lasting enthusiasm. Mentors valued the experience of guiding students to design high‑quality outreach activities and communicate complex ideas clearly.

“I never knew I could teach younger students—it made me realise how much I actually understand.”
— Senior pupil, Gracemount High School
“Watching the group plan and deliver their workshop so professionally was fantastic.”
— STEM mentor
